How to Keep Yourself from Buying More than You Need

Applications are inherently built to make your life easier, but it is easy to get overwhelmed and use more than you actually need. You have separate apps for time management, organization, bill pay and communication. More often than not, these applications do similar things, but are just designed for specific departments.

This redundancy causes frustration and keeps your company from being efficient. As you’re looking for new business applications, be mindful of how they’ll work with what you already have, so you aren’t creating larger problems for yourself down the road.

Make a List

Take some time and write out a list of all the current applications that you use on a day-to-day basis. Now, bullet point the features each app has to offer. Chances are, some of these features overlap. You may have an email app that has a calendar feature but you might have a completely separate calendar app. Do you really need both?

Creating a list helps you organize the clutter of applications you possess while at the same time showing you the features that are required to perform your day to day tasks.

Cut the Fat

Any redundancies that you find on your list need to go. There’s no point in using one application for one function and another that has the same function as the other. When deciding which apps to cut, check to see how customizable each one is. You may be surprised to find that an app has even more features that can be downloaded as add-ons.

There are many business management software applications that are versatile enough to meet a lot of your basic work needs. As you’re searching, check reviews and research your options before settling on something you might not end up using.

Check for Compatibility

An important factor that should be considered while weeding through your list of apps is whether or not the application can partner with another one that has a different set of features to meet your needs. A lot of web applications will offer a set of coherent and compatible apps that work well together, so check on the provider’s web page to see what other applications they offer.

The more compatible your apps are with each other, the more efficient your app portfolio becomes.

With the sheer amount of software applications out there, it’s fair to assume that there are apps tailored to your business, regardless of what it is you do. Redundancies, miscommunication and poor collaboration are byproducts of poor application management and can cost you both time and money. The better your software applications work together, the more efficient and productive you become.
